Evangeline Lilly Thought Her Being Asked to Star in Ant-Man was a Joke

Evangeline Lilly did an amazing job when she donned the Wasp costume for Ant-Man and the Wasp, but initially she thought that the invitation to have her play Hope Van Dyne was actually a joke.

Talking during Fan Expo Boston (via ComicBook), Lilly revealed:

"I was just finishing up on my press tour for The Hobbit when my manager called me and said, ‘I got a call from Marvel, and they're wondering if you might want to meet and see if this new franchise, Ant-Man, might be appealing to you.'… And I laughed."

Apparently, it was the inclusion of Paul Rudd and Edgar Wright that got Lilly interested in the project. She continues:

"I said, ‘Have they run out of superheroes and now they're making them up?' Because I never heard of Ant-Man, I genuinely thought it was a joke. And then he was like, ‘No, no, no, he's one of the original Avengers, this is the real thing.' I was like, ‘Well, the truth is, I was just a super-elf. I don't really need to be a superhero.' And he goes, ‘Hang on, hear me out, Ant-Man will be played by Mr. Paul Rudd and it will be directed by the Edgar Wright.'"

Though Marvel is currently gearing up for the release of their alleged ‘first' superheroine Captain Marvel, it's worth noting that the Wasp is the first female hero to actually have her name on the title of the film. I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer before we can get main titles for either Scarlet Witch or Black Widow.

As of late, Lilly has done some great work with her character, and it's said that she is looking for more team-ups when it comes to MCU films. Let's hope someone is willing to work on them.

Evangeline Lilly is set to appear in Avengers 4 when it comes out May 3, 2019.
