Eternals Slapped with Dreaded R Rating in Russia

There is little doubt that Eternals is set to get a PG-13 rating in the US and other regions. However, this isn't the case in Russia. The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe flick has just been slapped with the Russian equivalent of the R rating.

The revelation comes from the Russian film site Kino Metro, which confirms that Eternals has been given an 18+ rating. This is Russia's equivalent of an R-rating and is usually applied to movies that the ratings board believe should be "prohibited for children."

It's a surprising rating considering that Eternals doesn't seem particularly shocking or violent compared to other MCU films. The reason behind the more adult rating was not given but it might have something to do with a particular member of the Eternals.

It has already been confirmed that Phastos will be the first openly gay Marvel character to appear in an MCU movie. The character, who is played by Brian Tyree Henry, is supposed to share a kiss with his husband in the film. Considering Russia's strict laws against LGBTQ+ content, this might be the scene that is mentioned as having "brief sexuality" in the movie.

Eternals will also star Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie. The film is set to premiere exclusively in theaters on November 5, 2021.
