Throughout the marketing of the whole movie, it was thought that the Deviants are the bad guys in Eternals. These big and hideous creatures looks as if there were about to attack the inhabitants of Earth and they have that classic look of monsters that people would easily think that they’d be responsible for whatever is about to happen. However, in the movie, it seems that there is something or someone else as the real villain.

Eternals: Are the Deviants Really the Bad Guys?
One of the most surprising takes in Eternals is when Thena was captured by Kro, the creature with four eyes and alien-like physique, telling her that they cannot protect any of the people. Kro is expected to lead the Deviants when they attack Earth and the Eternals, looking all villainy and that. Except they don’t.
From the start, it is as if Kro and the Deviants are the villains of the story. The Eternals thought so to. However, further into the movie, the Eternals realized that while Gilgamesh was killed by Kro during their battle in Amazon, all they had to do was to listen to each other as they were on the same page all along and the Deviants only wants to stop the Emergence from happening.
It is no-brainer that the Deviants would want to stop the Emergence as such would eradicate their existence. However, they were wrongfully painted as the bad guys in the eyes of the Eternals to keep them from intervening. As it turns out, the Deviants only wanted to extend their help to save Earth and humanity.

Eternals: Who is the Real Villain?
As it turns out, sometimes, the people who are closest betrays the hardest. The Eternals were betrayed by one of their leaders, Ikaris, as it was revealed, in a flash back, that since their days during the Babylonian era, Ikaris knows that the plan of Arishem was to use the Eternals to make sure that the Emergence would go exactly as they wanted it to be. Since Ikaris knows Ajak and the other Eternals would desist, he pushed Ajak for the Deviants to devour.
Still, Ikaris is a mere pawn. The biggest villain is Arishem, the Judge, as they planted on Earth the Emergence where they put seedling of Tiamut here to ensure that a new Celestial would be fed off properly once born. The Eternals manages to save the day, being the superheroes that they are, sans Ikaris, when they used the Uni-Mind device of Phastos and the powers of Sersi.
