The story so far: Epic Games introduced a cheaper way for Fortnite players to get V-Bucks by directly paying them so that none of the tax goes to Apple or Google if you play on a mobile device. Naturally, the two companies removed the game from the App Store and Google Play respectively, which Epic Games was expecting since they are now suing both companies. And yes, they were expecting it because they quickly released an Apple 1984 parody and 60-page complaint of legal junction.
Apple has already said why this was done, though claimed that they would work with Epic to try and bring Fortnite back to iPhones. Considering how Apple still wants 30% of all purchases, it's clear that a huge compromise is gonna have to be made and might even affect how others bring games to the App Store in the future.
Google was a little more civil about their removal of Fortnite since the game was only removed from Google Play but can still be downloaded into Android phones through Epic Games. Like Apple, they're also supposedly talking with Epic to try and bring the popular free-to-play shooter back into their mobile devices. (Via The Verge)
The open Android ecosystem lets developers distribute apps through multiple app stores. For game developers who choose to use the Play Store, we have consistent policies that are fair to developers and keep the store safe for users. While Fortnite remains available on Android, we can no longer make it available on Play because it violates our policies. However, we welcome the opportunity to continue our discussions with Epic and bring Fortnite back to Google Play.
Fans have had mixed feelings towards the lawsuit. While most people will agree that Apple takes too much money from developers, the fact that Epic Games is trying to start some sort of rebellious movement is cringey. Epic is a billion-dollar company that is no stranger to controversy and isn't even that different from Apple or Google, so seeing them act like underdogs is not been great.
