Endgame and Infinity War Writers Reveal Scarlet Witch Almost Survived Thanos’ Snap

Before Thanos ultimately perished at the hands of the Avengers (see: Tony Stark), he first won the battle during the events that transpired in Avengers: Infinity War. After completing the Stones which compromise the Infinity Gauntlet, the Mad Titan snapped and wiped out half the universe including a large portion of the Avengers. That said, given the large ensemble cast, the follow-up movie underwent numerous re-writes one of which interestingly included the survival of one dusted hero.

Speaking with CinemaBlend, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely discussed an initial draft of Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch managing to make it to Avengers: Endgame and a brief appearance of her lover Vision's corpse.

"We had a moment where [Scarlet Witch] looked at his body in a drawer, and it was mainly just maudlin," Markus shared. "It was also frankly from a draft where she hadn't been blipped."

He further went on about how her survival caused a problem with the script, hence their decision to include her among the dusted Avengers.

"The problem was she'd gotten so much mileage and story in the first movie that she didn't really have anything that equaled that in the second," he said. "So it was a step-down."

In an earlier interview with ScreenRant, the two also revealed a subplot wherein Scarlet Witch and Rocket Racoon drive from the Triskellion to Stephen Strange's home, access the doorway to Kamar Taj, and eventually take an Infinity Stone. The idea ultimately was tossed because of how it may feel out of place in such a fast-paced film.

Still, it would have been a nice break or change of scenery throughout the three-hour film which had a lot of heartwrenching parts. It would have been quite entertaining watching Scarlet Witch and Rocket on a YA novel-esque road trip before saving the universe.

This isn't the last we'll be seeing of Scarlet Witch, though. Her story is set to continue well into Phase Four with a new Disney+ series entitled WandaVision. She is also set to appear in the Doctor Strange sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
