The Eminence in Shadow VA Reina Kondo recently announced that she’s going on a hiatus.

Details about her hiatus were shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) account. There, it was confirmed that Kondo’s hiatus was due to health reasons.

Hiatus periods for Japanese VAs aren’t new, as there have been many such examples over the years. With her break, fans are wondering how it will affect her upcoming anime roles given that she has some on the way.

Reina Kondo is a popular Japanese voice actor who is best known for voicing Eta in The Eminence in Shadow.

Even though other Shadow Garden members appear more in the anime, Eta is an important member. After all, she’s Shadow Garden’s chief engineer who has recreated many modern technologies.

As the anime’s second season ended in the fall season last year, Kondo’s hiatus should mean her role as Eta will not be affected. That is unless the anime gets renewed for a third season this year.

Kondo’s hiatus was revealed via an official statement made by her agency, Hirata Office. The statement mentioned that Kondo has been feeling unwell this month.

As recommended by her doctor, Kondo is now on a temporary break to prioritize her health, though the statement mentioned that she will continue to work with restrictions in place.

The statement did not mention what health issue Kondo is dealing with. What is clear is that she likely won’t take on any big anime roles in the coming weeks and months.

Kondo has been quite active over the past couple of years. Since 2020, she has voiced various popular characters, including Nikaido in Dorohedoro, Sakura Kouno in Horimiya, and Nagomi Wahira in Akiba Maid War.

This year, Kondo is set to voice Rikuhachima Aru in Blue Archive the Animation and Hiori Kazano in The Idolmaster Shiny Colors.

There’s no word yet on whether Kondo will continue to voice these characters. As the statement mentioned that she will continue working with restrictions, she may still voice them.

Depending on the severity of her condition, she may get temporarily replaced, as was the case with Gundam: Witch from Mercury previously, which featured a new VA for Nika Nanaura for three episodes.

For now, there’s also no info on how this will affect her role as Nikaido in the confirmed Dorohedoro season 2. Here’s hoping that she makes a full recovery in time for this and her other roles.
