Dungeons & Dragons: Chris Pine's Bard Was Originally Less Funny

There is little doubt that Chris Pine introduced a truly charming and hilarious character in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. However, it looks like Edgin the Bard almost had a completely different personality in the film. Pine revealed that the character was initially written to be more serious until he stepped in to make some changes.

In Dungeons & Dragon: Honor Among Thieves, Chris Pine plays Edgin the Bard, a former Harper whose wife is killed by a Red Wizard. Despite losing his family and being imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit, Edgin continues to stay hopeful, never giving up on being reunited with his daughter and giving her a peaceful life.

That's the Edgin we fell in love with in Honor Among Thieves but Chris Pine confirmed with SlashFilm that the Bard was initially supposed to be very different.

"I think originally he may have skewed a bit more roguish. Not in terms of the character, roguish in terms of kind of gruff and easily frustrated, let's say. I guess what I found in reading it was I found Edgin to be really bright and kind of buoyant," Pine said.

"He's the guy that always sees the silver lining. He's the guy where, no matter if there's a mudslide in the backyard of your party, it's like, 'Let's go swim in the mudslide.' There's always something positive to find in the thing," he continued. Pine then added that he decided to portray Edgin that way.

"Once I found that entry point into the character, it really made a lot of sense to me. I don't think I'd seen a character like that in a while," he said.

We're certainly glad that Chris Pine made the changes and gave the character more likeable and fitting to his class. It was truly awesome to see him in action in the film.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Daisy Head, and Hugh Grant. The film is now screening in theaters worldwide.
