Late last year, we learned that Dune: The Sisterhood hit a massive setback as the creative team decided to let go of some of the cast and crew and change the direction of the series. At the time, it was a concerning update considering that the project has been in the works for years now.
Fortunately, a while ago, reports came that the series is moving forward again as they tapped a new director and actors for the new iteration of the project, and production was expected to resume again.
However, with the recently-commenced actors' strike that has immediately impacted various projects that are in production around the world, there are questions again about whether they can resume filming since the union members are not supposedly working during the strike.
Now, we finally have the answer and it sounds like work will still continue despite the current situation.
Dune: The Sisterhood to Push Through with Production
According to Deadline, Dune: The Sisterhood is still set to resume its production in Hungary "any day now" despite the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes that are currently happening across Hollywood.
While SAG-AFTRA has ordered its members to not participate in any kind of filming during the strike, the series is under contract with British Equity, the UK counterpart.
Members of the Equity are still expected to continue to report despite the SAG-AFTRA strike since the UK union is not affected by what is happening stateside.
Even if some of the cast members are SAG-AFTRA card carriers and are still able to boycott, studios could still sue them to force them to work on the set due to UK's strict anti-strike laws.
As we learned a while ago, Anna Foerster was tapped to helm multiple episodes including the pilot, replacing Johan Renck. Olivia Williams and Jodhi May joined the cast to step in for Shirley Henderson and Indira Varma, who both left the project.
The series, which will draw from Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson and set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, "follows the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, establishing the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit."
This is a surprising update since a lot have assumed that the series will also be put on hold due to the strike and it sounds like found a way to work things around that will not violate the strike rules that SAG-AFTRA implemented.
We should be hearing more updates about this in the coming weeks or months depending on what will happen in this ever-changing situation.
