After opening in Japan back in June, the latest Dragon Ball film was finally released in North America, and it was a massive hit. In fact, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero reached #1 during its opening weekend in North America.
Following its Thursday opening, Super Hero reached an estimated USD 20.1 million, making it the biggest opening for an anime film in the region ever.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of its North American opening box office numbers:

- Saturday, August 20: $5,768,686
- Sunday, August 21: $3,450,000 (estimate)
- Total Opening Weekend: $20.100,000 (estimate)
Aside from being the biggest opening for an anime movie in North America, the film’s current box office tally is enough to make it the 6th highest-grossing anime film in US box office history.
While a Dragon Ball movie being successful isn’t too surprising given the franchise’s popularity, the opening weekend numbers of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero are seriously impressive.
It also means that the movie will no doubt break the top 5 anime films of all time in the US, and it might even beat Dragon Ball Super: Broly which is currently in 4th place. For reference, Broly earned USD 30.7 million in its entire US theatrical run.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is the 21st film in the Dragon Ball franchise, and is the second Super film following Broly which was released in 2019.
Super Hero was released in Japan on June 11, 2022, and it quickly became a big box office hit as it earned over 2 billion Yen during its Japanese theatrical run.
Dragon Ball series creator Akira Toriyama wrote the script for Super Hero, and it is directed by Tetsuro Kodama, with animation done by Toei Animation.
The movie follows Piccolo and Gohan as they face off against the reformed Red Ribbon Army and their two powerful androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2.
In North America, Super Hero opened on August 18 on over 4,000 screens, including select IMAX,4DX, Dolby Cinemas, MX4d, and DBox locations. It was released in both English-dubbed and English-subbed options.
