Doctor Who Casts Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa as Fourteenth Doctor

The Fourteenth Doctor has finally been announced! Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will take over as the new Time Lord after Jodie Whittaker's departure from Doctor Who!

BBC has officially announced that Ncuti Gatwa is the Fourteenth Doctor, confirming that the Sex Education star will take over once Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor regenerates in the last Doctor Who special of the year, which will be broadcast later in 2022. Not surprisingly, Gatwa is feeling proud and emotional over being chosen to take on the iconic role.

"It's been emotional," Gatwa said on the red carpet at this year's BAFTAS. "I was just saying, I woke up crying, and then I started dancing… I'm glad that it's finally out and I don't have to keep it a secret anymore because I'm terrible at that."

Gatwa also addressed the awesome casting in the BBC press release.

"There aren't quite the words to describe how I'm feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show mean so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care," Gatwa said in a statement.

"I will endeavour my utmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor's metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show," he continued.

"And so as much as it's daunting, I'm aware I'm joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show," Gatwa concluded.

Gatwa is the first black actor to play the primary protagonist in Doctor Who. However, he is hardly the first black doctor in the long-running series. Jo Martin had previously played the Fugitive Doctor in the episode Fugitive of the Judoon in Doctor Who Season 12.
