Doctor Strange 2 Director Reveals Who the Real Villain Is

Fans have been wondering who is the real villain in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film. It's one of the biggest questions unanswered ever since the Doctor Strange sequel was announced. Now, even though we got a new Doctor Strange 2 trailer, fans still have no clear concept of who the main villain of the film. We’ve heard several villain names like Nightmare, Mordo, Shuma-Gorath, and Mephisto dropped – we’ve also had several concepts of some heroes like Wanda and Doctor Strange facing their evil selves.

In a recent interview with Fandango, director Sam Raimi was asked if there is a new character serving as the villain; whether it is Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who’s behind the madness; or if it was Strange and/or Scarlet Witch variants the main culprits:

"Well, there's iterations of our characters throughout the multiverse," Raimi answered. "So, if I were to say Strange ... I'm not really supposed to answer this question, but I might be saying altered Strange. Same with Wanda and Mordo. But I would say, at different times, all of the above."

With Raimi’s answer, we are somehow still no closer to figuring out who the antagonist of Doctor Strange 2 actually is. While Raimi’s answer is unclear, we still have scenes of Mordo and Scarlet Witch fighting in trailer footage; a creature that looks like a Shuma-Gorath reference fighting both Strange and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez); and with the latest trailer, Wanda dropping the word “Nightmare’ in reference to the dreams she and Strange are having that could signal the arrival of a new villain. For now, we just have to wait for more footage to be released to somehow find out who is the real villain in the movie.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released exclusively in theaters on May 6, 2022.
