Netflix has just released the Bridgerton spin-off prequel, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. While the series is intended to be a prequel focusing on the story of young Queen Charlotte, the series takes place in two time periods: one in the past, showing us a younger version of the character, and the other in present-day Bridgerton.

So, how does the prequel series connect to Bridgerton Season 3? Do you need to watch Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story before Bridgerton Season 3? The answer is yes, you need to watch Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story before Bridgerton Season 3.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story takes place in two time periods: one in 1761 (thus, a prequel) and 1871 (present-day Bridgerton). Thus, there are two plotlines in the series.

The 1761 time period focuses on a young Queen Charlotte and her marriage to King George III. The 1871 time period, or present-day Bridgerton, shows an older Queen Charlotte who’s pressuring her children to get married and produce heirs to preserve the bloodline.

Both time periods also follow the stories of Lady Danbury, Violet Bridgerton, and the “Queen’s Man” Brimsley. And because present-day Bridgerton takes place after the events of Bridgerton Season 2, you need to watch Bridgerton first before the prequel series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

Why You Need to Watch Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story Before Bridgerton Season 3

Because the spin-off involves both the past and present-day Bridgerton, you need to watch Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story before Bridgerton Season 3. There are some storylines from Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story that would set up events in Bridgerton Season 3.

One is if Violet Bridgerton will find love again. In Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, she shares that she never thought of having another man after Edmund. But later on, she expresses her desire in finding a new husband and letting her “garden bloom” again.

But the most intriguing matter is Lady Danbury and Violet Bridgerton’s friendship. Viewers have seen a solid friendship between the two in the first two seasons of Bridgerton, especially when they both shipped Simon and Daphne and knew about Kate and Anthony.

But things become shaky for their friendship after Violet figures out that Lady Danbury had an affair with her father, Lord Ledger. While Lady Danbury attempts to explain herself, Violet cuts her off by insisting on having tea. Clearly, this story will continue in Bridgerton Season 3.

Additionally, we might be seeing more of Queen Charlotte’s children after Princess Victoria, Prince Edward’s wife, gives birth, which produces another royal heir.

On the other hand, the spin-off gives us an update on the Bridgerton siblings. In one scene in present-day Bridgerton, Violet shares with Lady Danbury how her children are doing.

“Anthony is on his honeymoon. Gregory has grown what seems, what, twice his height in a month. Eloise is in some kind of squabble with Penelope, and you know how close those two are. So she is stomping around the house, looking like a cloud of thunder,” Violet says.

Following the events of Bridgerton Season 2, we know that Anthony ends up happily married with Kate (now Viscountess Bridgerton). Bridgerton Season 2 also revealed that Penelope Featherington is Lady Whistledown, which angered Eloise.

Bridgerton Season 3 will focus on the love story of Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington, so we know that Penelope takes the center stage. Thus, her friendship with Eloise is also another matter that would be addressed in Bridgerton Season 3.

Additionally, it appears that Daphne and Simon already have baby #2. In one scene in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Violet plays with two babies. The babies appear to be siblings, and it’s unlikely that Anthony and Kate already have their first child since they’re currently on a honeymoon.

So, it’s clear that the two babies are Daphne and Simon’s. Even though both Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page won’t be returning in Bridgerton Season 3, this scene makes us feel their presence in present-day Bridgerton.
