What Is House of the Dragon About?
House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones, one of the most successful shows of all time.
House of the Dragon follows House Targaryen, the ruling house of the Seven Kingdoms for almost 300 years. The series shows the events that led to the beginning of the decline of the powerful house.

The prequel takes place nearly 200 years before the events of the original series and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, a main character in Game of Thrones.
House of the Dragon has a different story and new set of characters, as it does take place centuries before the original series. So, there is no need to watch Game of Thrones first to understand the story of House of the Dragon.
However, there are advantages if you watch Game of Thrones first. If you’ve already seen Game of Thrones, then concepts like the Iron Throne, the Hand of the King, and the presence of dragons won’t be new to you.
Additionally, House of the Dragon only focuses on House Targaryen, but in Game of Thrones, you get to know the other noble families too.
There are characters belonging to House Lannister, House Baratheon, and House Stark in House of the Dragon. So, if you’ve seen the original series first, then you already have a background of these houses.
There are also some easter eggs and references to look out for. However, all of these do not mean that you need to watch Game of Thrones first.
