Disney’s Stocks Drop After Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Poor Box Office Performance

It looks like Disney isn't doing too well this week.

According to The Wrap, the Mickey Mouse House's stock just dropped by 2.4% after the poor box office performance of Lucasfilm's latest Star Wars spinoff, Solo: A Star Wars Story and the cancellation of Emmy Award-winning ABC sitcom, Roseanne.

Though Disney did pretty well with Marvel's Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, the studio had a lot riding on the Han Solo standalone, a film which seems to help establish sequels and other spinoffs.

Analysts expected Solo to rake more than $130 million during its opening weekend, however, the film came in with disappointing returns. The film stumbled with an $84.7 million haul during its first three days in North American locations and $148 million across the globe. These poor results have raised a lot of concern for Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise, bringing out the question of whether or not audiences are feeling a "Star Wars fatigue."

Disney received another blow during the weekend when controversy hit Roseanne Barr, the lead actress of the studio's number one show on ABC. Roseanne was canceled by the network on Tuesday after Barr went on Twitter and made a post comparing Valerie Jarret, Obama's adviser, to "The Planet of the Apes."

Though the actress, later on, apologized for what she realized was a joke made in poor taste, Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, went on to cancel her show a few hours after she made the tweet.

"Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values and we have decided to cancel her show," Dungey said in a statement.

After recently being passed by Netflix in its place as one of the market's most valuable entertainment company, Disney has now totaled a seven percent loss in its year-to-date stock losses.

We wonder what this fall might mean for Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise.
