Disney’s ‘Mulan’ Gets Official Synopsis and Kick-Ass Poster

The Lion King is set to come out in a few weeks, but Disney has just released their first trailer for the live-action Mulan. The film looks to be embracing less of the cartoon and revamping itself to look more like a Chinese war epic, and besides the teaser, we get an official synopsis for the movie as well as a kick-ass new poster.

Here's the official synopsis:

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.

And here's the new poster:

If anything, it harkens back to one of the original posters of the animated film, but this time we don't have a look at any of the supporting characters. When the movie is close to release though, I'm sure we're going to get something with more people on it—such is the deal when it comes to actors and big-budget films.

I have to say, with the teaser, I'm kind of steadily accepting that this movie isn't going to be faithful to the animated film, and I think that's okay. Then again, I think there's something lost with this remake; in the live-action version, Mulan looks to be a formidable fighter, in the original, Mulan never bested anyone physically, but she always got ahead by being smart.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all turns out.

Catch Mulan when it hits theaters March 27, 2020.
