Disney's Maleficent Sequel Officially Starts Production

2014 saw the release of Maleficent, and the film kickstarted a trend with Disney of adapting into live-action their classic animated films. It's been eight years, but the sequel is in the works, and production has already begun for the film.

Check out the official announcement:

Besdies Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning reprising their roles as Maleficent and Aurora, Michelle Pfeiffer is attached to the movie as a Queen Ingrith. The film is said to pick up years after the first movie, and will have Maleficent and Aurora "form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within."

New cast members include Harris Dickinson as Prince Phillip (Aurora's love interest in Sleeping Beauty) as well as Ed Skrein, Robert Lindsay, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Returning cast members from the first film are Juno Temple, Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton, and Sam Riley.

Robert Stromberg won't be returning in the director's chair, however, and Pirates of the Caribbean 5's co-director Joachim Ronning is currently at the helm. Linda Woolverton is returning with a screenplay, however, with contributions from Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster.

No release date has been set for the Maleficent sequel.
