Disney’s Bob Iger Says 40% Of The Studio’s Upcoming Film Roster Is Being Directed By Women

It looks like Disney really is trying to make changes to make room for diversity and representation behind and in front of the camera of its various projects.

Last week, the 4% Challenge was presented to Hollywood during the Sundance Film Festival. Thor: Ragnarok and Westworld star Tess Thompson formally launched the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative 4% Challenge during her keynote address. The challenge is a program that is committed to having studios hire more female directors.

Taking to Twitter, Disney CEO Bob Iger not only confirmed that the Mickey Mouse House accepted the challenge, but that the studio also went above and beyond 4%. Posting on the social media site, Iger assured his followers that Disney was going to have a strong female presence, especially in its upcoming roster of films.

"Many have contacted us about accepting the 4% challenge, but I'm proud to say 40% of @DisneyStudios' upcoming movie slate is being directed by women and we are striving for more!," the Walt Disney Companies President wrote in his tweet.

Right now, we're not quite sure whether Disney counted female-directed films in Marvel, though we do know that big changes are being made in those fronts. Not only will Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel serve as the studio's first female-led comic book movie, but it will also bring the studio's first female-only director.

Meanwhile, Disney has a lot of projects led by women. There's Frozen 2 which is being directed by Jennifer Lee and then there's the live-action Mulan that's being directed by Niki Caro.

Star Wars has yet to follow suit, but we're sure that Lucasfilm has something planned.
