Disney Hasn't Greenlit Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 Yet

20th Century Fox

Production for James Cameron's Avatar 2 and 3 are already done while Avatar 4 and 5 have already been written. However, fans might not see past Avatar 3 because Disney still hasn't greenlit the final sequels yet.

James Cameron's Avatar franchise is currently owned by Fox, but the Disney-Fox merger is said to be closing at the end of this month, so that means that while projects in production and post-production will most likely be finished, future projects are not certain yet. The original plan was that Avatar 4 and 5 would go into production shortly after the release of Avatar 3, but Disney still hasn't made the decision to greenlight the films. As Cinemablend points out, part of the reason may have been that Fox wanted to see how the first two sequels would perform before they greenlight the last two sequels.

Of course, Disney could still make the call to continue the franchise after Avatar 3 and even though the Disney-Fox merger is expected to be finalized soon, it will probably take months before we see what movies they're planning to release.

Avatar 2 and 3 will most likely become a huge box office hits just like the first film so I bet that Disney will greenlight Avatar 4 and 5. Plus, the theme parks! The Walt Disney World is already the home for Pandora, the world of Avatar.
