Disney Has No Plans To Build A Cinematic Universe Like Marvel Or Star Wars

Marvel Studios might have found a lot of success stringing its films together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Disney says that it doesn't have any plans to interconnect its own movies the same way Marvel or Star Wars does.

The Hollywood Reporter just recently had an interview with Sean Bailey, Disney's Chief of Production, and during the discussion, the executive decided to touch on the topic of the Mickey Mouse House keeping up with largely shared universe franchises like the ones built by Marvel and by Lucasfilm.

According to Bailey, while the company is happy seeing the success of Star Wars and the MCU, Disney has no intentions of stringing its films together in a shared universe anytime soon.

"Just as Marvel has Iron Man and Thor and Captain America, maybe Belle and Cinderella and Mowgli and Simba are our superheroes. But we're not going to interconnect them in a universe anytime soon, I promise. Simba isn't in Jungle Cruise," the Disney executive said laughing.

Right now, it seems like Disney's agenda is to turn its classic animated movies into live-action features, most of which have seen success. Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, and Maleficent have all been top earners for the studio – though Tarzan and Cinderalla were a bit of a miss.

Now, Disney is continuing its animated-movie-to-live-action dream with its plans to release Aladdin, The Lion King, Dumbo, and Mulan in the next few years.

Earlier this week, Aladdin has been the talk of the town thanks to recently released first-look photos of the cast. While many are concerned about Will Smith's Genie, the actor promises fans there's nothing to worry about, his character's going to go all-blue in the movie.

Aladdin premieres May 24, 2019.
