It looks like Disney is planning to separate its content with the Mickey Mouse House's family-friendly shows and movies heading over to the company's upcoming streaming platform, Disney+, and its adult-oriented content heading towards Hulu.
After its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, Disney will own the majority of Hulu. However, despite the new ownership, the company will not attempt to dabble in the affairs of FX networks which create and produce content for the streaming site. It seems like Disney wants to keep its new acquisitions intact except for the layoffs that naturally come with mergers like these.
Disney made the announcement during its first quarter 2019 Earnings Call. Speaking in an interview with Variety, FX CEO John Landgraf confirmed its separation from Disney's upcoming streaming service.
"It seems quite clear to me that FX wouldn't be and shouldn't be a part of Disney Plus, shouldn't really be directly associated with the Disney brand. They're just too different. We're not a family brand at all, and therefore seems crystal clear it's going to have to be a component of the Hulu strategy. But exactly how that's going to work, I can't tell you," Landgraf explained during his discussion with the entertainment news site.
Right now Disney seems to be a bit focused on building content for Disney+. Marvel Studios is developing several mini-series for characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that have yet to receive a standalone film like Tom Hiddleston's Loki, Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany's Vision, Bradley Cooper's Rocket Racoon, and Vin Diesel's Groot.
Lucasfilm is also developing a live-action Star Wars series of its own under the directorship of Jon Favreau. Titled The Mandalorian, the series is set to feature a lone Mandalorian Warrior and his adventures in the outer rim of the galaxy far, far away.
Disney+ is set to release sometime late 2019.
