Disney Drops Indiana Jones; Tells Lucasfilm to Prioritize Star Wars

Variety revealed in November that Disney was looking ahead to launching an Indiana Jones TV show for Disney+. There were no narrative specifics given, and it was unclear whether the series would be a prequel to or a spinoff of the film franchise. But as fans wait for any announcement surrounding the said project, a new rumor surfaced that Lucasfilm will no longer move forward with developing the archaeologist television adaptation.

According to industry insider Jeff Sneider of Above the Line and The Hot Mic, Lucasfilm came up with the decision to pull the plug on its Indiana Jones series as instructed by Disney, which told them to focus on its Star Wars projects in the meantime. The Indiana Jones show is not the only one that has been canceled this month, but also the Disney+ series Willow after one season.

So far, fans are in favor of the company’s decision, given that Star Wars has been absent from the big screen for quite some time now, despite the success of their television shows. It’s just fair that the promised movies should be released first before Lucasfilm tries to fund other projects that no one seems to be interested in these days. These upcoming Star Wars feature films are expected to be announced at the Star Wars Celebration next month.

According to Sneider, "three movies will be announced at the Star Wars Celebration". Aside from the current season of The Mandalorian, two additional shows set in the galaxy far, far away, Ahsoka and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, are expected to debut later this year. Moreover, fellow Star Wars series The Acolyte is expected to arrive next year, as is the second season of the Rogue One prequel series Andor.

Directed by James Mangold, Harrison Ford returns as the legendary hero in the fifth installment of the franchise. Starring alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, John Rhys-Davies, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Oliver Richters, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to release on June 30, 2023.
