Disney CEO Breaks Silence on James Gunn's Firing

It's been a few months but fans are still upset over the firing of James Gunn over decades-old tweets. The Guardians of the Galaxy director has clearly changed over the years and many felt that Disney's firing of him was unjustified. Now, we finally know how Disney CEO Bob Iger finally feels about the situation and it looks like he has no regrets.

During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Iger revealed that he wasn't a part of Gunn's firing but did support the action to make it happen. He feels that its similar to the Roseanne situation, who was fired for posting a blatantly racist tweet to someone. Sure, Gunn's posts weren't nice either but unlike Roseanne Barr, he has become a better person.

"I would say there is a blend of my helping to make the decision to my supporting the decisions that have been made. Roseanne was completely unanimous. We discussed how it would be communicated and when because there were a number of entities that had to be properly filled in, but the decision was completely unanimous. The James Gunn decision was brought to me as a unanimous decision of a variety of executives at the studio and I supported it."

The Disney CEO revealed that the firings for both of them were voted unanimously by the company's executives, hence his compliance on the matters. Admittedly, this is disappointing but we are in a more sensitive generation and it's easy to see why Iger didn't complain. That being said, it's not a good move and they really shouldn't have fired Gunn in the first place.

Gunn's firing has been quite a ride for some of us, especially the Guardians of the Galaxy cast. In an open letter, they showed that they supported Gunn and wanted him reinstated. Dave Bautista has been the most vocal about this, even questioning his position and stating that he would have no regrets if he were fired for showing his support to Gunn.

As for the third film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been postponed indefinitely until they find a new director for the project. Disney and Marvel might have a hard time doing that since a number of celebrities and directors have shown their support for Gunn.

Most of the Guardians are expected to return in Avengers 4, which comes out on May 3, 2019.
