Star Wars fans of old remember how awful the original Star Wars Holiday Special was, but Disney looks to be singing a new tune and has announced an upcoming LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special.
According to USA Today, the new LEGO special will be premiering on Disney+ this coming Nov. 17 and will bring back Sequel Trilogy heroes Rey, Finn, Poe, and Rose back to celebrate Life Day (the Star Wars version of Christmas). Executive producer Josh Rimes said, "We wanted to give a wink and a nod to the original," and it's said that the 45-minute special is influenced by other holiday films like Christmas Vacation, It's a Wonderful Life, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
Here's a short synopsis:
Rey and droid pal BB-8 head off on a quest to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force, but their visit to a mysterious Jedi Temple sends them careening through time and space. Rey interacts with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and other characters in some of the franchise's most beloved moments, as they try to return in time for a Life Day feast with her friends on Chewbacca's Wookiee home world of Kashyyyk.
With this special said to be meddling with time, the center of the special is going to focus on the relationship of Rey with Luke, not Luke the old hermit, but rather the young Luke who was a hero of the Rebellion. "It becomes a much different take on a teacher and apprentice with the more seasoned Rey and a younger Luke," said Rimes.
This sounds like a lot of fun, and before any fans get angry about broken continuity, I think it's not going to be part of the official Star Wars canon. Even then, some original actors from the films will be back to reprise characters, so that's going to be fun.
Catch the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special on Disney+ coming Nov. 17.
