Like all businesses, Disney is taking a major hit from the novel coronavirus pandemic. Not only has the company been forced to shut down the production of highly anticipated titles like Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings, but it's also been forced to close the operation of all of its theme parks, including Disneyland Park and Disney World.
Now, it looks like the House of Mouse is forced to furlough non-essential employees later this month.
According to a report by Heroic Hollywood, Disney has just announced its plans to place non-essential workers on unpaid leave beginning April 19 due to the struggle caused by COVID-19. With business suffering from the novel coronavirus lockdown, the House of Mouse has decided to place non-essential employees on furlough for the time being.
One of the largest companies in the world, Disney's decision will leave thousands unpaid for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. This decision to furlough affects Disney staff from all around the world, meaning that thousands of families will be affected by the loss of income during the ongoing pandemic.
While this poses a whole lot of difficulty for Disney employees, Disney promises that workers will retain benefits and have their pay extended up to April 18. The House of Mouse also promises that employees placed under furlough won't be losing their jobs and that they will keep full healthcare benefits.
COVID-19 has certainly struck a huge blow on the economy. We can only hope that the pandemic comes to an end soon.
