Disney CEO Bob Iger Says Company Would Rather Remain Neutral On The HK Protests

The Hong Kong protests against the extradition bill have become major news over the past few months with reports of police brutality and with attacks against the protestor's demonstrations.

Despite the protests, it seems like Disney doesn't really want to lose its ties with China even though there's been increased scrutiny over business practices with the East Asian country.

Speaking in a Wall Street Journal Tech Live conference (via CBR), Disney CEO Bob Iger decided to acknowledge the issue regarding the Hong Kong Protests, saying that the Mickey Mouse House knows just how complicated the political climate really is.

"What we learned in the last week -- we've learned how complicated this is," the CEO began. "The biggest learning from that is that caution is imperative. To take a position that could harm our company in some form would be a big mistake. I just don't believe it's something we should engage in in a public manner."

It looks like the studio would rather play the safe side instead of making a stand. Of course, it shouldn't really come as a surprise to fans. Disney has invested a significant amount of money in the Chinese market and for the past few months, many of the films that Disney or its subsidiaries own have all gone through China's censorship guidelines to secure its release.

Disney wouldn't want to waste all of its efforts by making some sort of political statement by choosing which side to stand on in the issue regarding Hong Kong's battle against the extradition bill.

This isn't the first time that the company has remained neutral to political issues affecting the market. Iger also admitted to being strictly neutral when it came to US issues like the tightening of Georgia's anti-abortion laws.
