Director James Gunn Shares Disheartening Update on Suicide Squad 3

The Suicide Squad is one of the most outstanding films in the DC Universe. First premiered in 2016, the film grossed a total of 746.8 million USD and was celebrated all over the world. In 2021, Gunn helmed the sequel The Suicide Squad, which was also embraced by the fans. Now that two blockbusters are seated triumphantly at the box office, what are the odds of getting a Suicide Squad 3?

Recently, Gunn shared a discouraging update about the potential third Suicide Squad film.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn opened up about what may come next after his Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Gunn confirmed that a Suicide Squad threequel was discussed, however, the director's busy schedule seems to be the issue.

“Yeah, we’ve talked about it,… but the honest truth is, I just have so many hours in a day to work on stuff," Gunn said. "And I had such a fun time working in television that I really think that’s what I’m going to spend the next year of my life doing.”

The director admitted uncertainty on what his next project might be, and whether it could end up being a property of Marvel and DC. Gunn explained, “I’m thinking about what that next movie will be… and is that next movie going to be— if first of all, it could be something completely different than [the world of DC]. And I’m excited about Mike De Luca coming in to [Warner Bros.], frankly, because I’ve known him for a long time, and I love Toby [Emmerich], but I’ve also known De Luca. He’s been a friend of mine for many, many years.”

Gunn went on by hinting that he could still do a DC project with Suicide Squad characters, but won't exactly serve as a threequel of the film.

“I’m not sure what I’m going to do next because it could be a movie outside of [DC], but it could be a DC movie that has to do with these characters… does that mean it’s the ‘Suicide Squad’ movie or something else that’s within that world or a little bit different than that? And that I’m not exactly sure.,” Gunn concluded.

As much as fans would undoubtedly love to see a third installment film, it appears that the threequel is highly-unlikely at this point. However, that doesn't mean that Suicide Squad 3 will never happen, instead, it could just take years to develop due to Gunn's active schedule.

For now, it looks like the director is occupied on a mysterious DC Project. It might be Peacemaker's second season, which was already confirmed, or the rumored Amanda Waller spinoff. Aside from that, Gunn could also do another Suicide Squad spinoff with fan-beloved characters like King Shark and Idris Elba's Bloodsport.

For Marvel's side of things, Gunn is currently engaged with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is the franchise's last outing.

Both Suicide Squad and its sequel, The Suicide Squad are available to stream on HBO Max.
