Did Avengers: Endgame Retcon Captain America's Character Development? (SPOILERS)

MAJOR AVENGERS: ENDGAME SPOILERS WILL BE DISCUSSED

Avengers: Endgame has come and gone, with many fans discussing what they liked and didn't care for. While reception to the film has mostly been positive, with everyone feeling like it has a satisfactory end for the old guard, some fans felt that certain characters were subject to poor writing. Steve Rogers aka Captain America is one of those characters since many have mixed thoughts about how he got his happy ending.

Once the battle with Thanos ends and after they grieve for Tony Stark, Captain America is tasked with returning the Infinity Stones and Mjolnir to their proper timeline. Cap is supposed to come back after a few seconds but that doesn't work and we soon find out that Steve decided to live a happy life with Peggy Carter, giving Sam Wilson (Falcon) his shield and making him the new Captain America.

However, there is a scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron that has fans debating if Steve's development was retconned for the worse. When Iron Man suggests Steve to try and get a normal life, Cap says that he no longer wants that and "a different man" came out of the ice. You could argue that he is in denial and hiding his anguish by saving the world with the Avengers but the character should be moving forward.

Many felt that the point of moving Captain America from World War II to our time was to show how we should move forward with our ideals and accept that things are different, maybe even better, as time moves on. That's not always the case obviously (neo-nazis are everywhere these days) but Steve's arc should be about changing with the times, not regressing to the past.

Then again, when you have a story that involves bringing people back to life by collecting a bunch of jewelry from different time periods, things will always be weird and convoluted.
