Detective Pikachu is Not Looking to Compete with Marvel

Detective Pikachu has probably come out as one of the most anticipated movies of the year, but the hype dwarfs in comparison to Avengers: Endgame. With DP set to compete with Endgame once it hits cinemas, Legendary CEO Joshua Grode has confirmed that the film has no intention of competing with the MCU.

Talking to the Hollywood Reporter, Grode was asked about competing with Endgame next month, to which he says:

"There's room for a lot of different brands in the market. Pikachu is not meant to be a Marvel movie. People say, ‘Oh, you're going up against the Marvel movies.' Well, no, we're going up against ourselves and judging ourselves on: Do we execute our content the best way we could? We made the best version of Pikachu we could make."

Grode also confirms that the approach will be the same with Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is expected to come out later in May.

When it comes to the success of Endgame, you can't really blame Marvel Studios for the movie absolutely blowing up. Fans have basically waited for this movie since Iron Man came out back in 2008. Films like Detective Pikachu and Godzilla 2 don't have an 11-year-old hype train following it around; plus, it's probably good that there isn't a lot of pressure for the movies to be phenomenal—something I'm sure Endgame was being pressured to be.

For now, all we can really do is wait and see how Detective Pikachu will fare once it comes out. Catch the movie in theaters May 10.
