Detective Pikachu Defeats Avengers: Endgame At Friday Box Office

The reign of Avengers: Endgame as the highest grossing film every single day since its release last April is finally over, and all it took to defeat the Marvel superheroes was a little wise-cracking yellow monster. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu has just topped the Marvel Cinematic Universe flick by earning $20.7 million on Friday, its first day at the box office.

Pokemon fans certainly aren't playing around as they catapulted Detective Pikachu to make $20.7 million on its opening day. Interestingly, Endgame only took in $16.06 million on Friday, as per ComicBook.com.

But can Detective Pikachu actually defeat Endgame in the domestic box office this weekend? Estimates are already placing the Pokemon film to earn $57 million on its opening weekend. However, Endgame is already poised to bring in about $61.7 million on its third weekend. There's a huge possibility that Detective Pikachu will only end up in second place but it's still too soon to tell. Who knows, perhaps the Ryan Reynolds movie will surprise us this Sunday.

The synopsis for Detective Pikachu reads as follows:

"The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry's former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe."

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu also stars Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Bill Nighy, and Ken Watanabe. The film is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
