Despicable Me Creator is Going to Reboot the Shrek Franchise

According to the internet, Shrek is love and Shrek is life, but will those sentiments stay the same now that a franchise reboot is at hand? Looks like we're about to find out, as reports have come in about Despicable Me creator Chris Meledandri rebooting both the Shrek and Puss in Boots, even though the latter only had one movie. If these movies are still of quality, Shrek might still be love and life.

Reported by Variety, Universal is hoping that Meledandri can reintroduce the meme-ish ogre to a new generation of moviegoers who haven't seen the original films. Interestingly enough, Meledandri wants to keep the original voice cast for this franchise reboot so those that loved the Shrek films might be pleased with this development. It would be great having Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and Antonio Banderas back as these iconic characters.

"When you look back on those vocal performances they're awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations. The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it's not simply yet another film in a series of sequels."

Meledandri might be working on a DreamWorks property but that doesn't mean that he will soon be running that animation company. Meledandri said that it's too much work for him to do and even stated that his expertise isn't with managing companies. It's a nice and honest statement from the man, which should put any fears to rest about DreamWorks becoming more like Illumination.

"I love the process of making films and working with artists. I don't think I'm particularly great at managing companies."

Shrek felt unique back in 2001, as the movie basically made fun of all the fairy tale characters and their tropes. It also had a great message about physical appearances, which would only last for the franchise's first two films. A reboot might seem unnecessary but it will be interesting to see how Meledandri plans on changing this up.
