Deadpool Screenwriters On The Popular Yukio Identity Theory

Deadpool 2's out on its second week in cinemas, and fans have been busy counting Easter Eggs and forming their own wild theories about the different characters that appear in the film.

One of the most talked about characters is Negasonic Teenage Warhead's girlfriend, Yukio. Though the character doesn't spend too much time in the spotlight, there's been a lot of talk surrounding the character.

Speculation has been going around saying that Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna) in Deadpool 2's actually Surge, a power absorbing and power discharging mutant who eventually becomes the leader of the new X-Men. Unfortunately, according to Deadpool 2 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Yukio's just who she is: Yukio.

"That's not right," Reese said when he was told about fans' speculation in an interview with CBR. "She's a super-minor character. The character's name is actually Yukio, an assassin — but who's an adult assassin, so we just aged her down. She's such a minor character, we thought we could pretty much get away with anything."

One of the main reasons why fans just can't sit down with Yukio just being Yukio is that Deadpool 2 took a lot of liberty in adapting the character. In the comics, Yukio's actually a tough-as-nails Japanese mutant assassin who usually has nothing to do with Deadpool. Instead, she is associated with other mutants like Gambit, Storm, and Wolverine. However, as a character that's addicted the rush of putting her life on the line, Yukio makes a perfect addition to Deadpool 2. What do you think of Yukio in Deadpool 2?
