The mutants are set to make their long-awaited debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the X-Men reboot and the question fans seem to keep asking is: which actor will play Wolverine in the MCU? While there have been tons of fan casts over the years — from Taron Eggerton to Daniel Radcliffe, a lot of people are still holding out hope that Hugh Jackman will reprise the big-screen role he made famous 22 years ago.

Jackman has consistently been a part of rumors surrounding the X-Men reboot and while the majority of the MCU fandom wouldn't have any issues with it, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick believe the mantle should be passed onto someone who is relatively unknown in Hollywood.

Appearing on The Post-Credit Podcast, the Deadpool 3 writers offered their two cents regarding all the Wolverine casting rumors. Reese says: "Suggestions… It’s gotta be someone shorter this time… So maybe a Zack Galifianakis or Patton Oswalt, someone like that… I don’t know. Look, we don’t have any inside information on that. Even if we did, we couldn’t share it but we don’t… I would honestly go more… an undiscovered person, because Hugh Jackman was reasonably undiscovered the first time and I think there was initial bucking [of], ‘Oh, he’s too tall,’ or, ‘He doesn’t look right,’ or, ‘What is this Australian thing?’ I think that if they’re playing their cards right, they probably should make it someone we’ve never seen."

Wernick, on the other hand, is confident that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige knows what he's doing. He said: "Oh, don’t worry, they’ll play their cards right, you know, Kevin Feige, he knows what he’s doing over there… he doesn’t need any of our opinions."

I totally agree with Reese and Wernick's sentiments and if anything, Marvel Studios should entrust the X-Men franchise to a new generation of actors who will breathe life into the mutants for potentially years to come.

The X-Men reboot is currently under development.
