DC Universe's Harley Quinn Will Tackle Her Abusive Relationship With Joker

DC Universe's Harley Quinn animated series has a lot of people excited since this is the first time DC will be giving the character such a big platform. While she has appeared in animated shows before, this is the first time that Harley will be the headliner. This makes sense since her popularity really blew up when DC released the first Harley Quinn solo comic book and just like that comic it will deal with something obvious; Joker as an abusive boyfriend.

Executive Producer Justin Halpern talked with GameSpot about this topic, pointing out that it's been a long time coming. Considering how Suicide Squad romanticized their relationship, a show like this will be essential to tell people that The Joker and Harley's relationship should never be idolized.

"The idea was that we've all been in relationships with someone we felt maybe wasn't right for us, all the way to someone who was toxic for us. How you extricate yourself from that is really what this show is about. How you get out of that kind of relationship and figure out, 'What am I going to do now that I'm out of it? What do I want? I've been living somebody else's life for a really long time.'"

Now that she's free from The Joker's influence, the series will follow Harley as she decides to do what's next. There's a very good chance that the show will have Harley pursue a relationship with Poison Ivy, which has always been a much safer one for the character. It also seems to be a polyamorous one since Harley has dated other men whilst with Ivy, which is fine since polyamory is about trust.

Harley Quinn will premiere on DC Universe later this year.
