DC to Reprint Influential and Controversial Captain Marvel/Shazam! Story Next Year

(DC Comics/Fawcett Publications)

DC and Warner Bros. are releasing a Shazam movie next April, which means that we can expect a lot of graphic novels based on the character. To the surprise of many, DC Comics will be reprinting a classic storyline that many have been waiting for; The Monster Society of Evil.

No, this isn't the masterful retelling from Jeff Smith, but the storyline from Shazam/Captain Marvel creators Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, which no one expected to see. It was one of the very first multi-part comic book epics, which was rare for the Golden Age.

Unfortunately, one thing that wasn't rare in that era was the way other races were drawn, which is another reason why this re-release is a surprise. The Monster Society of Evil was a Captain Marvel storyline during the World War II era after all.

Expect the introduction of this graphic novel to explain these racial issues since this comic really was a product of the times. Warner Bros. does this when showing older Looney Toons episodes, so it would work to DC's benefit if they did that for this graphic novel collection.

Here's a solicitation of the collection, which was first shown by 13th Dimension:
