DC Beats Marvel As The First To Release Two Female-Led Superhero Movies In A Year

Marvel fans might be pretty excited for Captain Marvel, but DC continues to be the first to break barriers for female superheroes in the comic book movie industry.

Not only is Warner Brothers' DC Extended Universe the very first major comic book movie franchise to develop and present a female-led superhero standalone movie (Patty Jenkin's Wonder Woman), but Screen Rant reminds us that it's also the first to schedule two female-led comic book movies in one year.

While Marvel is still gearing up to release its first female-led superhero movie, Captain Marvel, DC is now set to release two female-led entries in 2020, namely Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984. The Wonder Woman sequel was originally set to premiere in 2019, however in October Warner Brothers decided to change its mind and move back the premiere of the period movie to 2020, forcing the film to share a year with Birds of Prey.

While this might disappoint some fans anticipating Wonder Woman 1984 n 2019, the delayed release date makes 2020 the year for women in comic book movies. Of course, while DC seems to be in the lead for female representation, this doesn't mean that other studios aren't making a significant effort.

Aside from Captain Marvel, Marvel Studios is preparing for female-led comic book movies becoming the norm. Marvel has been even considering an all-female team up at the request of Tessa Thompson, Thor: Ragnarok's Valkyrie.

With the upcoming Marvel Cosmic Universe and the merger between Fox and Disney, Marvel has a lot of options for female-led entries. We can't wait and see what the studio has planned for everyone.

Birds of Prey hits cinemas February 07, 2020. Wonder Woman 1984 releases on June 5, 2020.
