David Lynch Gets Honest About the New Version of Dune

Denis Villeneuve's Dune was a huge success when it was released back in 2021 and it prompted Warner Bros. to immediately greenlight a sequel that is set to release later this year. There are also plans to expand the franchise as they are also working on a prequel series that will air on HBO Max.

However, that wasn't the first time that the Frank Herbert novel was adapted to the screen. Back in 1984, David Lynch directed a film adaptation of Dune that ended up becoming a box office flop and panned by the critics. The director since then disowned the film although it also gained a cult following years later.

In a recent interview with Cahiers du Cinéma (via Far Out Magazine), Lynch was asked about his thoughts on the new film adaptation of Dune where he gave a dismissive response as he warned the interviewer that he doesn't want to get asked about the film ever again.

"I will never watch it, and I don’t even want you to tell me about it, ever," he simply said.

Based on his recent response, there is no doubt that Lynch still has some irk about the Dune property as he doesn't want to acknowledge his connection to the novel and has no interest to see what Villeneuve did on the new film adaptation that has better reception than his version.

For years after the 1984 film was released, Lynch publicly disowned the film several times as he shared stories about how he lost creative control of the project and attempted to have his name get removed from the credits to no avail.

In a Q&A video back in 2020, the director also looked back on the film and proclaimed that he is proud of every film that he made in his career except Dune.

"I’m proud of everything except Dune," he responded. "I’ve liked so much working on different movies. It’s not so much about pride but the enjoyment of doing, the enjoyment of the work. I’ve enjoyed working in all these different mediums. I feel really lucky to have been able to enjoy those things and to be able to live."

It is obvious that we will never hear Lynch's opinion about Villeneuve's adaptation of the novel. As we've seen in the last couple of years, the general reception of the new film has been positive and fans of the novel believe that Dune finally had a great screen adaptation.
