David Harbour Says His Hellboy Can’t Have Sex With Humans

Some Hellboy fans might have a thing for David Harbour's iteration of the Unwilling Harbinger of the Apocalypse, but according to the Hellboy star, his version of the hero can't actually have sex with human beings.

Yes, you heard that right. Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien or Hellboy's human girlfriend in Guillermo del Toro's Hellboy movies, isn't around in Neill Marshall's reboot because Harbour's version of the Big Red has no need of a human girlfriend.

Speaking in an interview with JoBlo, Harbour talks about Liz's absence and then goes on to discuss the human character played by Alice Monaghan, Sasha Lane.

"Yeah, it's an avuncular relationship [with Alice]. I mean, it's funny because in an earlier draft, there was the temptation to do that, and I was very adamant to the fact that Hellboy cannot have sex with human women," Harbour explained.

According to the actor, he never wants human relationships to be an issue for his version of the Unwilling Harbinger of the Apocalypse.

"Like I don't want that to ever be an issue, and I want it to be known for him, whereas this is this Blood Queen Witch in the movie, right?" the actor goes on "So there is a world that he can exist sexually in, but it is not in our human universe. And Alice is, even though she has sort of a witchcraft thing to her, she is a human being. And so, I think Hellboy is very, you know, it's much more of an avuncular relationship. He would never, yeah."

Marshall's Hellboy reboot has been touted to be closer to the comics than the original films by Del Torro, and according to Harbour, he had to do heavy research, checking the comics and studying the character's facial expressions and gestures. Because of this, Harbour says that Hellboy is much less of a typical superhero movie but instead a grittier antihero film like Logan and Deadpool.
