David Ayer Turned Down the Chance to Direct a Suicide Squad Sequel

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad has a lot of people excited since they want to see how the Guardians of the Galaxy director handles a big DC IP. Others aren't too big on this pseudo-reboot since they actually like the 2016 Suicide Squad from director David Ayer. Well, as it turns out, Ayer was actually given the chance to direct a sequel to his 2016 DC movie but he didn't take it.

Speaking with Slash Film, he merely stated: "I had a chance to do it, but I went another way." This is a pretty vague statement from Ayer, though the director has been keeping himself busy with movies like the Netflix-exclusive Bright, which isn't great but has an intriguing concept and has a ton of fans. He was also working on a Gotham City Sirens film but that's been put on hold, which likely has to do with next month's Birds of Prey.

Despite this, Ayer has stated that he has plans to return to comic book movies. Here's his statement regarding that topic:

I love the world creation of it and I love the power of the IP and the fans. It's dangerous. It's like juggling chainsaws, but I am drawn to it and it's definitely an arena I'll play in again.

Considering how much the studio interfered with his 2016 film, one can only imagine how much better his sequel would have been. As it stands, James Gunn will be giving us that with 2021's The Suicide Squad, which is a pseudo-reboot that uses the same characters like Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang.

The Suicide Squad is slated for an August 6, 2021 release.
