For years, David Ayer has been open about his frustration over the theatrical version of the maligned 2016 DCEU film Suicide Squad which he claims was different from the original vision he had in mind before the studio interferred with the cut.

As a result, the director and many DC fans have been clamoring for Warner Bros. to release the "Ayer Cut" of the film similar to the petition for the Snyder cut of Justice League a few years ago.

While we will never know what his original vision for the film was before it was changed during post-production, there is definitely some curiosity from fans regarding what the quality might have been compared to the other DCEU movies.

David Ayer Believes He Was in Consideration to Run DC Films

In his recent appearance on the Real Ones with Jon Bernthal podcast (via CBR), Ayer opened up about the making of Suicide Squad once again.

This time, he claimed in the interview that during the earlier stages of production, he heard some rumblings that the executives at Warner Bros. were considering him to potentially run DC Films based on the dailies that they saw from the film.

"During a time, during Suicide Squad, when the dailies were coming in, people were like 'Oh shit, maybe Ayer’s going to take over DC.' It’s Game of Thrones in there. The palace politics were insane," Ayer said.

However, it sounds like the conversation surrounding Ayer potentially taking over the DC franchise did not lead to more serious talks and it was just a suggestion that was being thrown during that time.

As we know now, Warner Bros. eventually made some massive changes to the film during post-production that were allegedly as far as from Ayer's original cut, and the reception of the film during its release ended any possibility of him taking over the franchise.

Looking back, the idea of Ayer heading DC Films sounds too far-fetched now since it became clear even back then that Warner Bros. was not confident with his creative vision.

While it is a good what-if question to consider, we also know that the scenario was just too impossible as we've seen how the DC franchise was handled throughout the years with the regime changes and their persistence to try to recreate the success of the MCU to their own franchise.

Now, it looks like Warner Bros. may have finally figured out the right formula for the DC franchise with the hiring of James Gunn and Peter Safran to head the new DCU franchise and do a soft reboot that will presumably fix the mistakes of the past.

Suicide Squad is available to stream on Max.
