Dark Phoenix Director Simon Kinberg Takes The Blame For The Movie’s Poor Performance

There were a lot of high hopes for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, but when it finally premiered, the film became one of the lowest-rated films in the X-Men franchise, turning into a major commercial and critical disappointment.

Now, as the film enters its second week in cinemas, director Simon Kinberg steps forward, taking the blame for the film's underwhelming performance with its poor reviews from critics and fans alike.

Speaking in an interview with Kim Masters from KCRW, Kinberg opens up about Dark Phoenix, admitting that the film didn't connect enough with fans despite the effort that he and his team put into making the movie.

"It clearly is a movie that didn't connect with audiences that didn't see it, it didn't connect enough with audiences that did see it. So that's on me," Kinberg said, "I loved making the movie, and I loved the people I made the movie with."

There's been a lot of discussion as to why Dark Phoenix turned out the way it did. According to Kinberg, Dark Phoenix was supposed to be X-Men's version of Avengers: Endgame. Not only was the film meant to close Fox's X-Men film franchise, but it was also meant to play out as a two-part movie. Unfortunately, changes were made to the film's production. Dark Phoenix was rushed, and a major overhaul was made to the film's story. The Skrulls were meant to appear in the film, however, Fox wanted Kinberg to change the villains of the series seeing how Dark Phoenix might be compared to Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel movie.

Such a shame that things had to turn out the way they did.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is currently screening in cinemas.
