Dakota Johnson recently opened up about the negative reception and poor box office performance that Madame Web has received.

The Sony's Spider-Man Universe movie garnered overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and fans. It also failed to live up to its box office potential as it had the lowest opening ever in the franchise's history.

Recently, one of the stars of the film, Sydney Sweeney, poked fun at the movie's box office failure while doing her opening monologue when she hosted Saturday Night Live.

Now that the press tour for the film is over, Johnson finally got candid on her experience making Madame Web during a recent interview with Bustle.

When asked whether she was surprised about the negative reception it received, she responded, "Unfortunately, I’m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has."

Johnson went on to explain her frustration about the decision-making that was made by a "committee" during the making of the film.

"It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made — and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out — decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee," she said.

"Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not."

The actress also shared that she won't be doing another comic book anytime soon following her experience making Madame Web.

"But it was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now," she said.

"But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, 'Wait, what?' But it was a real learning experience, and of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand."

It sounded like Johnson didn't have a pleasant experience making the Sony movie which is perhaps why she was not caught off-guard with the reception that it's been receiving ever since its release last month.

This also somewhat addresses the questions that critics and fans have regarding the quality of the film since Johnson sheds light on the fact that Sony's creative decision for the project wasn't always artistic-based.

Madame Web is still showing in some theaters.
