Cryptic Studios is developing the upcoming Magic: The Gathering MMORPG called Magic: Legends, though the studio has a history with the IP thanks to CEO Steve D'Angelo.
During a recent interview with Game Informer, D'Angelo, who helped establish the rulings of Magic: The Gathering just a few weeks after it launched in 1993, talks about his history with the card game and how Magic: Legends was pitched to Wizards of the Coast. For nearly a decade, the Cryptic Studios CEO worked with Wizards of the Coast to define the rulings used by judges throughout Magic events.
D'Angelo went into detail on how Magic: Legends, talking about how it felt doomed from the start. You can watch the interview below:
In the interview, D'Angelo also talks about how Cryptic Studios builds a master knowledge base inside the game teams, saying that they had to know the game's IP as well as the IP owners know it. The video also shows a library of MTG books the design team had to read to master the IP. D'Angelo said that he personally re-read everything.
With D'Angelo and his teams' master knowledge of MTG's IP, we know that Magic: Legends is in good hands. Hopefully, it will be a huge hit but I'm not that impressed with the gameplay footages they revealed so far.
Magic: Legends will launch for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2021.
