Auggie Starts Seeing Numbers in Mid-Air: What Do They Mean?
The first episode introduces 3 Body Problem's first-ever conflict awaiting in the Netflix series.
While the first victim we see is the leading candidate for the Nobel Prize in physics, Auggie's (played by Eiza Gonzalez) vision makes it clearer to us that she is seeing a countdown timer that is invisible to the average human's eyes.
Despite having a couple of friends she could reach out to, she decides to brush this off by having a smoke. That is until she meets this stranger who offers to light her cigarette.
Without prompting Auggie on how Tatiana knows about the concept of a countdown, Tatiana tells her that the only way to "stop" the countdown is by putting a halt to their nano research.
As Tatiana puts it: "No more nanofibers. You shut down the lab. Simple."
"You don't want it to get to zero," Tatiana warns Auggie, "Nothing good ever happens at zero."
Considering that this warning came from a complete stranger, Auggie didn't know what to do with her instruction. What happens when the countdown finishes? Does she die?

What Happens When the Countdown Reaches 0 in 3 Body Problem?
The first episode reported that a couple of prominent scientists had suddenly disappeared, seemingly giving up on life by suicide and taking their eyes out.
Apparently, select scientists who were close to the truth behind the world's reality have witnessed this countdown and wanted to find a way to stop themselves from seeing it in mid-air.
The countdowns, as episode 5 titled Judgment Day revealed, were caused by none other than the ominous alien race, the San-Ti.
The countdowns were thanks to the "Sophons" that the few select humans interacted with, thus, how their retinas could see the elaborate ruse.
Essentially, when the countdown reaches 0, nothing happens. It was only meant to manipulate the minds into ending their research.
They only served as warning signs, to have Earthlings sabotage their own Science projects and discoveries.
The countdowns were meant to instill fear of the unknown consequences for the select scientists witnessing them.
