Could The New Captain Marvel Synopsis Be Hinting At A Surprise Cosmic Villain?

Marvel fans have really had it good this week. Not only have they gotten high-res images of Brie Larson's Carol Danvers and the other characters of Marvel's Captain Marvel movie, but they've also gotten a brand-new trailer and poster teasing what's to come in the studio's very first female-led superhero movie.

Now, according to a new report by Cosmic Book News, it looks like Marvel's decided to update the synopsis to Captain Marvel, giving fans a hint at a surprise villain in Larson's first standalone movie as Carol Danvers.

The potential surprise villain?

"Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios' ‘Captain Marvel' is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom."

While some might not see the hint, the keyword teasing the potential arrival of another Marvel baddie is "maelstrom." Marvel comic book readers know Maelstrom as a cosmic villain featured in the Cosmos In Collision storyline by Mark Gruenwald in the Quasar comic book series from the 90s.

Though the character has yet to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's been some speculation that the Marvel baddie could try to attack Earth to absorb the planet's kinetic energy, only to be stopped by Captain Marvel. After all, the trailer for the movie did mention an alien invasion.

Let's wait and see whether Maelstrom really does make his way to Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel is set to premiere March 9, 2019.
