Could Disney Have Decided To Drop Rian Johnson’s Upcoming Star Wars Trilogy?

With news that Disney plans to slow down the release of Star Wars films after the poor performance of Solo, fans are itching to know what Lucasfilm has next for the franchise. Will the studio be releasing another Star Wars spinoff movie after completing its sequel trilogy? Or will it be working on another set of Star Wars movies?

The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson may have been given a Star Wars trilogy of his own, but Express speculates that Disney might have actually dropped the controversial filmmaker.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy just recently received a three-year extension on her contract with Disney, and in the wake of the announcement is the lack of certainty over Johnson's own Star Wars trilogy. While Lucasfilm has begun production on Jon Favreau's live-action Star Wars series, little has been known about Johnson's promised set of Star Wars films – a possible result of the backlash against The Last Jedi.

Sure, Johnson's Star Wars movie might have become both a commercial and critical success for Disney, however, the film also has become one of the most divisive films in the franchise. While there might be quite a number of fans that enjoyed the Force Awakens sequel, it seems like others just couldn't stand how the film subverted fan expectations and how the film turned Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) into a jaded hermit.

Of course, while it seems like Disney might be planning to put Johnson's Star Wars trilogy on hold, the Mickey Mouse House has yet to confirm its plans for the films. Who knows, Disney might actually be saving the trilogy for 2022. Let's just wait and see.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits cinemas December 20, 2019.
