Could Disney Be Using The Mandalorian To Test Whether Star Wars Really Is Oversaturated?

It looks like Disney might be hoping that Jon Favreau's upcoming Star Wars series, Star Wars: The Mandalorian, might save Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away.

According to a new report by The Blast, documents gathered by the publication reveal that Lucasfilm has recently filed for a few trademark applications so that the studio can secure toys, video games, school supplies, temporary tattoos, books, clothing and footwear, all for The Mandalorian.

That's not all. The publication also claims that one of the products listed in the application also includes a legitimate Mandalorian helmet for fans.

While it might not seem like much of a surprise to see Lucasfilm filing trademarks for merchandise for its upcoming series, seeing the studio gather so many products for The Mandalorian makes it seem like it has a whole lot of confidence in Favreau's series becoming a big hit among fans.

Disney has been planning to slow down the production of Star Wars movies after Episode IX, but of course, the Mickey Mouse House wouldn't want to let its milking cow rest that easy. Star Wars is indubitably one of the biggest and most popular science fiction franchises in Hollywood history – and it's a franchise that sells a whole lot of things to its overly passionate fanbase.

It might not be the case, but The Mandalorian would definitely be a good test for Disney to see whether or not fans have had enough of Star Wars or whether they should keep the "one film a year" train going. Why else would the company be spending more than $100 million for the series first 10 episodes?

The Mandalorian is expected to premiere sometime next year along with Disney's new streaming service.
