Though the San Diego Comic-Con 2020 may have been cancelled this year, the organizers tried to salvage it with a virtual event called Comic-Con@Home. With the internet having come off CC@H, numbers have pointed out that the Con had actually failed to gain traction.
According to Variety, despite landing panels for A-list titles like The Walking Dead and Star Trek, Comic-Con@Home was not able to build the expected hype that the SDCC was able to generate. Tweets were apparently down by 95% compared to last year's SDCC and buzz for anticipated films were also down by 99%.
Probably one of the most hyped things from the con were the New Mutants preview as well as the Walking Dead panel. There was a lot riding on Zack Snyder's panel where he revealed the black suit Superman, but even then the numbers didn't come out as expected.
There are several reasons as to why the convention would fail. For one, the team had only very little time to prepare the event, seeing as they were just trying to salvage what they could since the con was officially cancelled. What's more, we didn't have any panels for the big studios, specifically Marvel and Lucasfilm. While Snyder did hold his Justice-Con, marketing was so poor that people weren't even aware that it was happening, and we were just getting news about it after the whole thing.
Since virtual cons are a new thing that the world is just adjusting to, it would make sense that the first Comic-Con@Home wouldn't come out so well. With everyone hoping that SDCC comes back full swing in 2021, hopefully this info is a learning experience for any other people who hope to hold their own virtual cons amid the pandemic.
