Spider-Man: No Way Home Becomes First MCU Film This Year to Get China Release

Due to the pandemic, the box office results of the MCU films so far this year have been lower than usual and none of them have grossed nearly the numbers of the past few films in the franchise. But despite that, the results are still considered impressive by today's circumstances for the studio to call a big win for them. Now, that might change as the next MCU film has been approved for release in the biggest international market in the world.

According to Variety, after the release of a new Chinese poster, Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to have a theatrical release in China after passing the censorship and screening approvals so far. It doesn't have a formal release date yet, but it does indicate a confirmation that it will be getting released in the Middle Kingdom.

This would mark the first MCU film this year and in Phase Four to get approved for release in China. Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Eternals weren't approved for theatrical release in the country and it is being cited as the reason why they haven't grossed as high as they could have. No reason was cited for Black Widow's absence. But in the case of Shang-Chi and Eternals, they were not approved due to Simu Liu and Chloe Zhao's respective past comments that are critical of the country.

This is good news for the film's box office potential as it opens up the possibility of it becoming the highest-grossing MCU film this year or even the highest-grossing film overall for 2021 (at least according to Forbes). China is known to be the biggest international market and has contributed to the large box office numbers of some of the biggest blockbuster films in the past few years.

The film is expected to do very well at the Chinese box office due to the popularity of Spider-Man in the country. Spider-Man: Far From Home grossed around $199 million in China which was its strongest overseas market and there's a possibility that No Way Home could reach similar numbers.

Fans have been hyped for Spider-Man: No Way Home as it is expected to tackle the multiverse and feature villains from the past Spider-Man films (as the newly-released poster indicated) as well as the rumored appearance of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. A new trailer is expected to drop soon.
