Jay Halstead's departure from Chicago PD was sad enough, given that he was a founding member of Hank Voight's Intelligence, but the way he was written out sparked claims that his actions were out of character. Now, Jesse Lee Soffer explains whether or not he plans to return after his unexpected exit.

Will Jay Halstead Return to Chicago PD?

The way Halstead left the Chicago PD was contentious. The good news is that NBC has not closed the door on his return.

In a recent interview with Variety, Soffer was asked if he would ever return to his Chicago PD role, and he said that he would be happy to do so while feeling awful for the show's viewers because of how his character was written out.

"Never say never. I feel so bad for the fans that are like, 'Is he going to come back?' 'What's he going to do?' 'What's going on with him and Hailey? ... I like to think — and I hope the fans think this too — that he's just in another country right now, doing what he does best and making the world a safer place," the actor shared.

"In a family, sometimes somebody moves away or goes to college somewhere else. I still love it. I still love the fans. And I still love Halstead. Halstead's always going to be in my blood. That's never going to change."

Jesse Lee Soffer To Stay Involved In Chicago PD

Halstead's identity crisis led to his sudden departure from the Chicago PD. He apparently reached his breaking point after years of concealing up Intelligence's occasionally shadowy activities and decided to leave to rejoin active duty in the military. He promised his wife and long-term partner, Hailey Upton, that he would return from his stay in Bolivia before he went.

It's not clear if this means that Soffer will reprise his role as his persona in order to formally end things with Upton. NBC may just leave the story unanswered if they don't want to.

While it's unclear if or when Halstead will reunite with Intelligence, Soffer's return to Chicago PD has been scheduled – the actor will direct Episode 16.
