Ever since the Oscars announced a Popular Film category, fans immediately assumed that Black Panther would be the one winning it. It is a pretty popular movie after all and many even say that it might be the best Marvel movie to date but the studio doesn't seem to be happy with that. Marvel wants the movie to have a Best Picture nomination and win; not to settle for being popular.
Black Panther lead Chadwick Boseman seems to agree, as the actor says he wants the film to win the Best Picture category and not just the upcoming Popular Film one.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Boseman made his feelings clear about wanting the movie to get a Best Picture nomination. He pointed out how the movie had to create a world and religion, which it did really well, and the fact that audiences liked it means it should get the prestigious nomination. Boseman admits that he doesn't know what the Popular Film prize looks like but says that it's not what Marvel is campaigning for.
"What we did was very difficult. We created a world, we created a culture ... we had to create a religion, a spirituality, a politics; we had to create an accent; we had to pull from different cultures to create clothing styles and hair styles. It's very much like a period piece. ... So, as far as that's concerned, I dare any movie to try to compare to the [level of] difficulty of this one. And the fact that so many people liked it — if you just say it's [merely] popular, that's elitist."
An argument could be made that there are other films more deserving to win the award since Black Panther is still a superhero movie at heart. Still, a nomination would be enough to show how good it is, even if it does win the cringe-worthy Popular Film award.
Black Panther is now available on Blu-ray and digital services. It will come to Netflix in September.
